Where Were You During the Carnival Crawl?

Kircys Canela, a tourist from New York City, came to experience carnival on St. Thomas for the first time. Instead of the traditional carnival experience, Kircys experienced an event known as the first ever Virgin Islands Carnival Crawl. The Carnival Crawl is a 3 day event that is supposed to revolutionize the way tourist and locals experience carnival, while encouraging support of local businesses. The goal of the Crawl, as explained by the creator, Khlarni Rivers, is to “establish a form of sustainable tourism that entices locals and attracts new tourists.” The Carnival Crawl consists of a 3-day event format:

  • Pre-Game Party
  • Culture Crawl (All White Affair)
  • Beach Party

The Crawl also features unlimited drinks throughout Village Nights

According to Ms Canela, it was an absolutely great way for her to be introduced to the culture through the “Culture Crawl (All White-Affair). “Great food better hosts (Khlarni Rivers & Nylai Callwood) led to an experience that I won’t ever forget.” “People should do it you have no idea what you will get out of it.”

Jahnyah Brooks a St. Croix local and a student of the University of the Virgin Islands stated that the Carnival Crawl was a refreshing change to the normal parade/village formula.

He added, “The Culture Crawl was crazy, the event had cultural drummers, folk stories, cultural dancers, and even fire dancers. Like other Virgin Islanders I’ve been doing the parade/village formula for years, and it was fun, but this restored my excitement for carnival season. I’m excited to do this again on St. Croix.”

The Carnival Crawl seems to be supported by large and small businesses alike. Will this be the next stage of carnival celebration? Only time will tell.
